Here are my top picks for fitness activities to do in May 2019 here in Edmonton:
1) Need for Speed Track Workouts:
Ever wanted to join an adult track club? I mean there's nothing like putting on a pair of spikes and running like the wind! Well a sweet group of runners called Need for Speed meet outdoors every Tuesday at 5:30 am... you heard it correctly! They have their first meet tomorrow at the Rollie Milles Athletic Field. I know a few of these athletes and they're one of the most welcoming groups of smiling happy endorphin filled people I know. So yes it's early and yes it's going to be a heart pumping workout.
2) Bike Swap:
Are you looking at your bicycle thinking it's time for an upgrade? Edmonton Bike swap is on this upcoming weekend on May 11 at the Expo Centre. You can drop off your ride in the morning and trade it in for that 12 speed you've always wanted in the afternoon. On top of all of this, your entrance fee goes to a non-profit bike group to fix up bikes. The organizers are also looking for some help. These province wide events are founded by Chris and Laura Grant but it's getting to be a lot to simply run it from their kitchen table. Check out their website albertabikeswap.ca for more information. Their focus is to keep bikes out of the junk yards!
3) Coronation Triathlon:
I talked about the Edmonton Triathlon Club last month but this month Edmonton's Coronation Triathlon is on! It's a sprint triathlon which means you swim 1000 m at Peter Hemingway pool, bike 26 km, and then run 8 km. I'm tired talking about it. But the scenery is amazing and the sprint distance is a great way of testing the waters when it comes to this sport. I'll be cheering all of you on May 26!
4) Camping and Hiking:
Campers Village is ramping up their community outreach events this year. I remember I used to beg my parents to go to their first location when I was young. It's where I bought my first A-frame hiking pack, which I still have at home. I know, I'm a pack rat and I need some Marie Kondo in my life. But for those who are interested Campers has everything from day trips to short overnight guided trips planned with local experts every month.
