The frigid weather is finally warming up and Edmontonians are getting ready to head out and enjoy fun in the sun. But while the snow melts here are my top recommendations for fitness things to do in March:
Intro: well we've survived a frigid February which may have frozen some of your fitness goals. Thankfully Chris is back to give us some ideas about fitness events or classes go to warm us up for spring in March that I talked about on CBC Radio:
Boxing has come back into the mainstream but how do you know if you're jabbing, dodging and uppercutting safely? Panther Boxing Gym is holding a learn to box program every Friday at 6:30 pm. Many of the fitness classes in Edmonton are great but I've found that the main issue is learning how to do each of the movements correctly in a short amount of time. Learning how to start a punch from your feet and using that power to finally end by hitting the target not only gives you a great full body workout, it also ensures that you have a lower chance of injury. 2) Learn to Run:
Some of us have some lofty running goals wether that's running your first 5 km or a marathon. Running Room has always had a great learn to run program for all levels. The advantage is that you can enter these programs with a Running Room race in mind and in many instances the group will prepare you for that race in particular. If I'm planning on running the Edmonton Marathon in August, since it's sponsored by the Running Room you can enroll yourself in a course that will get you off the sofa and completing the marathon! You'll get some homework but much of the difficulty in completing a goal is really the accountability which these programs tend to provide. Learn to run or running groups give you a community of people who are aiming for the same goal and will show up every day you need to train. You can check out more information here:
For those solo runners (I'm one of them) download an app! Couch to 5 km, Stava, Nike Run, these all have great planning strategies similar to Running Room except you can literally roll out of bed, tie your shoes, and head out for a peacful day.
3) Quit your fad diet:
Here's to the people who were Atkins Dieters back in the 90's, the pro-paleo dieters that never saw it through, and my keto-whole-foods peeps that reduced their calories to 1000 hoping they would maintain and sustain but just ended up back a square one.
